Google launches Gemini 3.1 Pro AI model with improved reasoning
Summary
Gemini 3.1 Pro is Google's upgraded AI model for complex tasks, offering improved reasoning. It's available in preview via API, Vertex AI, and the Gemini app.
Google launches Gemini 3.1 Pro
Google has released Gemini 3.1 Pro, an upgraded AI model it says is significantly smarter at complex reasoning. The model is rolling out in preview starting today for developers, enterprise customers, and consumers on premium plans.
It is available through the Gemini API, Vertex AI, the Gemini app, and NotebookLM. Google states the release is to validate the updates and continue work on agentic workflows before a general availability launch.
Major improvements in reasoning
Google positions 3.1 Pro as a major step forward in core reasoning from the Gemini 3 series. The company says it is designed for tasks where a simple answer is insufficient, such as synthesizing data or explaining intricate topics.
This claim is backed by benchmark scores. On the ARC-AGI-2 benchmark, which tests a model's ability to solve novel logic patterns, Gemini 3.1 Pro scored 77.1%.
Google says this is more than double the reasoning performance of its predecessor, Gemini 3 Pro.
Practical applications and examples
Google showcased several specific use cases to demonstrate 3.1 Pro's advanced capabilities, which focus on complex, code-based tasks.
- Code-based animation: The model can generate website-ready, animated SVGs directly from a text prompt. These are built in pure code, keeping file sizes small and visuals crisp at any scale.
- Complex system synthesis: In one example, 3.1 Pro configured a public telemetry stream to build a live dashboard visualizing the International Space Station's orbit, bridging complex APIs and user-friendly design.
- Interactive design: The model coded an interactive 3D simulation of a starling murmuration. The experience includes hand-tracking for user manipulation and a generative musical score that shifts based on the birds' movement.
- Creative coding: When asked to build a modern portfolio for Emily Brontë's "Wuthering Heights," the model designed a contemporary website interface that captures the novel's atmospheric tone, going beyond simple text summarization.
Availability and access
The rollout of Gemini 3.1 Pro is tiered based on the user's platform and subscription. Access begins today in a preview phase.
For consumers, the model is rolling out in the Gemini app with higher limits for users on the paid Google AI Pro and Ultra plans. It is also now available on NotebookLM exclusively for those Pro and Ultra subscribers.
For developers and enterprises, 3.1 Pro in preview is accessible through several channels:
- The Gemini API via AI Studio
- Antigravity
- Vertex AI
- Gemini Enterprise
- Gemini CLI
- Android Studio
The release follows last week's update to Gemini 3 Deep Think and the initial launch of Gemini 3 Pro in November. Google cites user feedback and rapid progress as drivers for these iterative improvements.
