Jason Momoa to star in Helldivers movie

Jason Momoa has been cast in the lead role of the upcoming live-action film adaptation of Helldivers 2. The project is moving forward at Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions.

Justin Lin, known for directing multiple Fast & Furious films, is attached to direct. Producers include Hutch Parker, PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash, and Lin through his Perfect Storm Entertainment company.

From cult game to blockbuster franchise

The original Helldivers game launched in 2015 from Arrowhead Game Studios. It was a top-down shooter where players defended "Super Earth" from alien threats.

The franchise exploded in popularity with the 2024 release of Helldivers 2. The sequel shifted to a third-person perspective and became a massive hit.

The Helldivers movie is officially scheduled for a theatrical release on November 10, 2027. The film will adapt the universe of the sequel, where elite soldiers spread "managed democracy."

Its satirical, militaristic sci-fi tone has drawn frequent comparisons to Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 film Starship Troopers. The project aims to translate the game’s cooperative chaos and dark humor to the big screen.
