Pebble Production: February Update
Summary
Pebble is nearing production for three new products. The Pebble Time 2 watch, now waterproof to 30m, should start shipping in April. The Index 01 smart ring is also in testing. Mass production timelines are set but delays are possible.
Pebble Time 2 production begins in March
The Pebble Time 2 smartwatch is scheduled to begin mass production on March 9th. The company confirmed the schedule in a blog post, marking the final step after completing its Production Verification Test (PVT) phase.
This phase involved manufacturing hundreds of test units to uncover and fix issues. The factory is currently closed for Lunar New Year and will reopen in late February.
Waterproofing certified for swimming
A major focus in January was improving the Pebble Time 2's waterproofing. The company has now certified the watch with a 30-meter (3ATM) water resistance rating.
This means the watch can be worn while swimming and in the shower. The company cautions that it is not a dive watch and should not be exposed to hot water or high-pressure water jets, which could weaken the seals.
First deliveries expected in April
Based on the current production schedule, the first Pebble Time 2 units are expected to reach customers in early April. The company aims to finish delivering all pre-orders by early June.
Shipment timelines are dependent on a smooth production ramp-up to a target of 500 watches per day. The company warns that delays are likely if any issues arise.
- Pre-orders with an initial December date: Arrival in April.
- Pre-orders with an initial April date: Arrival in June.
A few weeks before a watch ships, customers will receive an email to confirm their address, select optional accessories, and pay any owed tariffs or taxes. For US orders, the tariff is $10 per watch.
Index 01 smart ring progress
The Index 01 smart ring is also in the PVT phase, with several hundred units manufactured. It has received an IPX8 rating for waterproofing, meaning it can withstand submersion in 1 meter of water.
You can wear it while washing hands or showering, but not while swimming. Mass production is still aimed for March, but a firm start date is not yet set.
The company is developing a $10 ring sizer kit to help customers find their exact size, as Pebble's sizing differs from competitors like Oura. It is also gauging interest in producing larger sizes 14 and 15, which would require about $50,000 in additional tooling.
Pebble Reframe 2 on track for late May
The Pebble Reframe 2, a smart ring focused on recovery metrics, is progressing through development. It recently finished its Design Verification Test (DVT1) phase.
A significant advantage is that its electrical design is nearly identical to the Pebble Time 2. This allows the small firmware team to write code that works on both devices simultaneously.
The current estimated production start date is late May. The team will now focus on waterproof testing and final tweaks.
Software updates and developer tools
Pebble reports significant software output, with frequent bug fixes and new features being added to PebbleOS and the Pebble mobile app. The company also promises an update on advances to its SDK and developer tools soon.
